We all have a tough time packing, and some more than others tend to over pack (I have definitely been guilty of it!). Since traveling became my passion I have needed to cut down my luggage. Sometimes I have to travel by myself and being 5’3” and 110lbs carrying a 50lbs bag just isn’t the right move. So, like the New Yorker I am, I have to make what I need fit into a small space.
*Let’s make a note that we will always have these two things in our luggage: a white T and a pair of jeans, so they can be included in all the palettes below.*
The Patriot: Red, White, and Blue
These three colors tend to be the most flattering on almost every skin tone. My favorite way to pair these colors is by doing a base of blue and white and then have pops of red; whether that be as a pop of red in your shoes or accessories.
I’m also a big fan of the white sneaker. Right now the big brands are Vans and Stan Smiths from Adidas, but there are always your trusty pair of Keds. Though for walking around they may not be the most practical since they don’t have a ton of support.
If you’re doing a lot of prints it’s only natural that you bring a neutral shoe (whether that be a nude or a metallic) along so as to balance out an otherwise busy outfit.
The New Yorker: Black, Gray, and White
Perfect for the minimalist at heart. This color scheme works for everyone, especially those of us loving the monochromatic look.
These colors are the easiest to dress up making it a lot of people’s favorite to pack. It’s super easy to throw on a black pair of jeans or trousers with a white blouse or button down and put on a cool pair of gray suede shoes and call it a day. Some great colors to add accents with are red, burgundy, and yellow, but really any color goes well.
And we all need our black leather jacket, don’t forget! This one from IRO is my favorite right now, and if you’re price conscious this one from Trouvé is fantastic!
The Hunter: Olive, Tan, and Ivory
I tend to love these colors most for spring and fall, but by adding bold colors to it like bright reds and blues for summer and deep colors like burgundy for winter they transition very well.
With Greenery being the Pantone color of the year you will be seeing various shades of green, including olive, making a big impact on clothing trends. Pieces like military jackets become staples and brings together a casual outfit of a white T and jeans without putting in too much effort.
This is also a good category to include animal print. My preference is using it in small doses, but I did find this lovely Equipment top in which the cheetah print is faded and doesn’t make me look like I belong in the Flintstones.
We’re always going to bring that special something no matter what, like those Gucci loafers you spent your entire pay check on or that sweater you swear goes with everything, but by using a color palette it will make everything simpler and easier to match, reducing your luggage size by at least half!… Now toiletries are another story, ha!
I would love to know of your favorite color palettes you’ve used for travel in the comments! And remember to follow @thewanderingduck for daily posts.
